6th Grade Artistic Creations 2017-18
What did we do this year in Art?
Pinch Pot Monsters-
artists built clay 3-D models of monsters, starting with basic pinch pot shape.
Dried projects were completed with, tempera glazes. Engineering/Art connection
Habitat to Home was our art room theme for 2017-18
We explored a variety of
artistic processes, asked questions presented connections and made discoveries-
during the journey created some great art too!
Sixth Grade program overview
Objective for students: to experience a variety of mediums and
techniques used for creating art. Expanding art history knowledge, connect to
class themes while building art vocabulary. Using art tools, strengthening fine
motor skills, support individual development of expression and following a
complex series of directions.
Day of the Dead Cultural
exploration, artists that inspire, how does this tradition connect to North and
South American history and World influences?
Day of the Dead alters- building on previous knowledge create a small clay “sugar
skull” form, collage, sharpie and assemblage to create a 3-D frame to display
and create a cohesive design. Form and function Engineering/ Art connection Connecting to classroom Social Studies

Take a Line for a Walk-Abstract art overview. Building contained organic 2-D
line drawings that will become 3-D organic forms. The transformation of a
surface through design, color, cutting and construction personal expression, paper
collage with patterns, drawing, and 3-D cutting skills, spatial problem solving

Pompeii Volcano relief composition – 2-part project, connects to Ancient History Class
Themes. Review of Pompeii Mt. Vesuvius and the structure of volcanoes. Build a
volcano shape relief image with tissue paper/glue. Part 2 color with
watercolors and oil pastels, showing activity and time of day. Science/History/Art observation and
imagination
Promotion 6th grade Portraits-personal statement, photography and colorful collage (end
of year project)

Fifth/Sixth Grade program overview
Objective for students: to experience a variety of mediums and
techniques used for creating art. Expanding art history knowledge, connect to
class themes while building art vocabulary. Using art tools, strengthening fine
motor skills, support individual development of expression and following a
complex series of directions.
Day of the Dead - Cultural exploration, artists that inspire, how does this tradition

Social Studies themes
Festive Paper Mache Sugar Skulls-Observe the human skeleton. Inspired by the Day of the
Dead celebration artists created a personalized paper-mache
sugar skulls, details were added with markers and embellishments. Science/Art observation and imagination
3-D Paper sculpture -building an interesting stable 3-D paper sculpture from flat paper, cutting skills, spatial problem solving, Engineering/Art
High in the Sky- artist created an overlapping hilly landscape, dramatic sky and added hot air balloons. The sky was layered with paint and collage clouds. Balloons and hills were completed with collage, assemblage, sharpie details.
Half Face-
Working from half of a black and white photo of a human face, students used
their observation skills to recreate the other half of the original image in
pencil. Skill building, understanding basic facial proportions.
Me Money!-
building on the previous skills and knowledge student created their own money
with a self portrait in the design. Drawing were transferred to a printing
plate and they printed their own Art Money. Skill building/Vocabulary
5th Grade Artwork 2017-18
What did we do this year in Art?
Audubon inspired bird prints-Student select bird drawing from their portfolio to
create as a limited run series of print. Transfer image to soft plate using a
wooden stylist. Model printing process. Small groups pull prints, sign artist
proof, refine and make individual paper and ink color choices. Reflect on
images.
Royal Birds- Building on information from the Audubon project, students drew their
own royal bird, pre-printed frames provided a formal presentation. Projects
were completed in maker, crayon and or color pencil. Inspired by famous
portraits of the 16th-19th century.

Audubon Day- Introduction
to famous American based artist, explorer and naturalist John James Audubon.
How did he live and work?
Bird sketches-studying
class resources, handouts, and print reproductions create a bird sketchbook, pencil
& sketch paper. Looking closely, details, contour lines, anatomy, using
art/science vocabulary. Science/Art

Claymation Selfies- using simple line drawings as the bases for a
self-portrait, artists added color and detail with modeling clay. This project
allowed for a lot of personal expression and encouraged creative exploration of
materials

4th Grade Artistic Creations 2017-18
Objective for students: to experience a variety of mediums and
techniques used for creating art. Expanding art history knowledge, connect to
class themes while building art vocabulary. Using art tools, strengthen hand
eye coordination in creativity and following a series of more complex directions,
problem solve as individuals.
Starry Night Inspired Landscape -What are the basic elements of landscape? Dividing the
picture plane. Art vocabulary, following a series of direct drawing
instructions, sketching, developing a personal approach drawing crayon and over
painting with water colors, salt added for star effect. City/Country theme

buildings- If you could
construct any kind of building you wanted to what would it look like? Using a
variety of art materials students created their own building as part of their
class town. Project connects to

Charming buildings- working with model magic clay artists created 3-D mini charm buildings Project connects to engineering and design concepts
The red barn – moving from 2-D to 3-D construction, students were given a flat barn
template and challenged to cut, collage and create their own 3-D construction. Project connects to engineering and design

3rd Grade Artwork 2017-18
Objective for students: to experience a variety of mediums and
techniques used for creating art. Expanding art history knowledge, connect to
class themes while building art vocabulary. Using art tools, developing fine
motor skills and following a series of directions
Owls- what is an owl shape, what are owl body parts? Continuous line drawing, following a series of steps, learning to
let the pencil/pen guide your design, pen stays on the paper. Problem solving
how to create small details? Color, cut and create and environment Science/Nature/Art connection observation -imagination
Leaping Orca- what is an orca what are the body parts? Building a multi-layer
composition. Watercolor background to create ocean and sky/color blending,
tempera paint splash, sketch, draw, color and cut out whale form and position
on background elements. Art vocabulary and skill building.
Howling Wolf- Supporting grade curriculum Native American studies artists create a
narrative work using color value sky/stars/moon background and a wolf
silhouette. Project completed using tempera paint, construction paper, metallic
markers and gel pens, Painting and Collage. Nature/Art
observation imagination
Totem Pole Project: Building on previous knowledge/skills students create
a paper totem component that will be part of a larger group project. Handouts,
design samples and coloring pages provided inspiration. Paper collage. Skill
building and connecting to Core curriculum.
Clay Owls-developing
clay building skills to create an owl form. Artists used tools to create
patterns and design. Part II, tempera glaze paints were applied to coat and
protect the finished project.
