After School Here Be Dragons

Grades K-3rd

 

During our six week after school studios we will explore the World of Dragons by creating our own 3-D sculpture of the great beast.  Each student will complete one personal dragon to take home at the end of the workshop series and our young artists will also participate in a group dragon project that will be on display to the entire school.

In this workshop series we will use a variety of materials and techniques such as markers, paint, lots of glue, paper mache and assemblage. Students will need to bring a paper grocery bag (with handle) to class to carry home their creation and if they would like they can bring a paint shirt for the messy days. I will provide all of the art supplies and materials for these projects but I welcome donations of recycled materials such as: cardboard tubes, bottle caps (all shapes and sizes), flats pieces of card board, plastic lids, buttons, wire…please feel free to send them with your child for use by the team.

Using recycled and re purposed materials

as well as basic art supplies students

create their own imaginary buildings.

The basic structures are primed and painted

and additional elements such as windows, doors

brick work...are added. More painting and gluing.

To complete the piece students may add landscape

elements and people/animals.

Imagination in 3-D

 This Spring After School series is designed for young artists but can easily be adopted to challenge older students as well. Working with a variety of materials and supplies, students created expandable imaginary animal puppets and a gnome with his/her mushroom home. The gnomes are painted coconut cups (a donation that has rolled around the art room for 2 years) I primed most of them white to give the students a smooth base. Some chose the non primed cups. One coat of tempera was applied as a color foundation to block out body parts (face, dress, hands...) and left to dry.  Details and smaller bits of color where added later and last the cotton beard/hair and pointed hat/cap.

Green Art for the Garden

This Spring After School class focused on the use of recycled materials in the creation of art bird houses.

Eye Spy with My Little Eye

Students grades Kinder-3rd were given the opportunity to explore nature using their artist's eye. They drew and painted, cats, snakes, bats, and birds.

Recycle Robots

This 6 session class was designed to give students grades 3-6 a chance to design and create their own Recycle Robot. First we did a sketchbook and collected ideas about what a robot is or can be. Students brought in items for the project such as plastic bottles and food containers, corks, wire, cardboard tubes, buttons, lids...and we created a junkyard. With adult supervision they used hot glue to assemble their creations. The robots were spray painted silver/chrome.
