 Using art to share feelings and emotions. 

This month we explored several fun books and took on drawing mini monsters and shape monsters!

These were some of the books we used that inspired our own Creature Creations!

What did we do this year in Art?

Habitat to Home was our art room theme for 2017-18

We explored a variety of artistic processes, asked questions presented connections and made discoveries- during the journey created some great art too!

Pre K  Special Day Class & Pre K Kinder DHH program overview

Objective for students: first experiences to a variety of mediums and techniques for creating art. Hands on development of fine motor skills and begin to follow a basic direction.

Kinder Kats- Exploring materials and creating, using precut cat shapes, crayons and color pencils Fine motor skills, hands on experience

Mini clay pumpkins- first clay experience creating a sphere shape. Part II adding color and paper hand shaped leaves with student’s names supports Pumpkin Unit/Seeds/plant cycle

 My Winter hat- Showing emotions in art, parts and placement of features on the human face using precut shapes to create their own Happy, Sad, Angry… expression.

City at Night-  Color blending to create a starry night sky. Using pre-cut shapes artists build a city skyline. Sky/Ground, City/Country

Shape house- Pre-cut forms to build a house following a series of directions. Shape identification and skill building.

Expressive Color painting-  Using 6 rainbow color tempera paints to cover the paper in an expressive and exploratory project. Color theory

Magic Snails- following a series of directions artist blend 2 colors of clay (model magic) to create a coil form and build a snail shape. 

Art History connection:  Warhol, pop art, Bearden, Glad Monster Sad Monster and Very Hungry Caterpillar book, Van Gogh Starry Night,

Kinder Fall Leaves

Changing a Summer green leaf into a Fall warm colored leaf, using oil pastels and for a bit of detail with added a cut and glued yarn center vein.


Student works were displayed on the bulletin board near the front office for all to enjoy.

More Cute Cookies

What a sweet and fun way to learn , what are the parts of our face and where are they located. Where are my arms, legs and tummy...coloring, cutting, gluing and creating!

Zebra stripes

Exploring materials, the strips were painted on large sheets of white paper using Tempera paint and expired plastic Starbuck gift cards. Blue sky background were painted week earlier.

We used old gift cards and paint to drag print the stripes

Do you want to build a snowman ?

Sculpture project with white air dry clay. Small, Medium and Large balls, buttons for details.

Exploring Color with Paint

Red and yellow, green, black and gold, blue and white...lots of hands on messy fun and smiles.

Rainbow Robots

Multiple skills and techniques-Background exploration of color using liquid watercolors and wet on wet application. Robot form created from pre-cut squares and rectangles-parts Head, Body, 2 arms 2 legs. Details added with additional shapes, crayons and color pencil. Allows for a lot of personal creativity within a structured format. Stickers and shiny collage material are available as a last step.

Cookie People

Working with my special needs Pre-K and DHH students I use a larger cookie person pattern. We explore color and texture while "decorating" and designing these fun paper treats. It is a fun way to begin developing cutting skills as well as the parts of the face.

Warhol inspired hand prints

Who doesn't like to stick their hand in silky cool paint? We also worked in a little color theory too! To add another step you can cut out (or have older students cut their own) hand print and mat on a new color. For these little ones this was enough!

Picasso Flower Project

This two part project was created by the Pre-K and Kinder Special Needs students. They painted the flowers and did the blue hand prints. Picasso is our inspiration for this piece.
