Warhol inspired hand prints
Who doesn't like to stick their hand in silky cool paint? We also worked in a little color theory too! To add another step you can cut out (or have older students cut their own) hand print and mat on a new color. For these little ones this was enough!

Bird Prints
This is such a fun 4 part project that connects to 5th grade social studies while reinforcing skills and introducing students to print making as an art form.
I use a lot of handouts to support this project and allow a lot of time for students to develop a collect of bird drawings for their portfolio. They are encouraged to make notes and compare the line drawing resources with the color prints provided.
This project also integrates the travels and art work of American Artist James Audubon.

The colors of Fall
This two part project was explored by my kinders and mixed 1st/2nd special needs students. I have a great set of leaf rubbing plates we used to create transfer prints working with cool crayon colors. We talked about color and how leaves change with the seasons, what are seasons and how seasons are not holidays.
Part II involved having the students selecting their most successful transfer rubbing and adding warm colors by painting with liquid watercolors.
I used old certificate copy paper for this project
because I really liked the frame it provided for the the students.
This is a great lesson to connect to color theory, introduce new art vocabulary and build on skills.
Thursday
Make some Money
This fun project introduced 3rd grades students to art/skill of print making. Using small pre-cut foam board and wooden stylists they created their own money. A simplified self portrait provided the center piece for this art project.
Connects to 3rd grade standards (money) and supports Art History (Andy Warhol).

Great Birds of North America
Supported by observation and discussion students created several pencil sketches of North American birds. They were provided with table top hands outs and other visual supports to create these drawings and collect them in a sketchbook/portfolio.
This project supports skill building and connects Early American History themes such as Mr. Audubon (explorer/artist) and his work regarding the birds and wild life of early North America. These drawing were then transferred to soft printing plates using a wooden pencil. Plates were printed with water base wood block ink. Students learned to sign and number their prints and artist's proofs.
Wednesday
Penguin Spong picture
This fun hands on project if perfect for younger students as an introduction to printmaking. You might need two sessions so that the body (spong print) can properly dry. Pre cut shapes and crayons/color pencils complete the process.
Monday
Turtle oh lovely Turtle
Inspired by Aboriginal art work and the universal appeal of the mandala image students create their own collage turtle. This three part project is perfect to connect to classroom language arts themes and support district standards and cultural curriculum. Hand outs, discussion and art prints are an important element in the presentation of this project.
Part I: Using pre-printed mandalas students create the shell of their turtle using ccolor pencils, metallic color pencils and crayons . Review the color wheel and use of complimentary colors and or warm and cool colors color with a purpose
Part II: Provide an assortment of printmaking shapes and a limited choice of paint colors (connect to Aboriginal art work) students create a background for their turtle.
Part III: Students create a body and attach the turtle to the printed background. Finishing with markers and color pencils for details.

Giraffe-Giraffe
This 4 part project involves direct drawing, cutting, gluing, painting, and print making as well as collage techniques and coloring.
Giraffe-Giraffe connects to the art work of primitive painter Henri Rousseau as well as classroom themes of animals and imagination.
Part II: Blue skies and white clouds (color mixing and values)
Part III: Cut out the head and neck and add pattern/design
Part IV: Putting it all together.
Here is the art blog that I found the base for this lesson thanks, Georgetown Elementary
