Habitat to Home was our art room theme for 2017-18

We explored a variety of artistic processes, asked questions presented connections and made discoveries- during the journey created some great art too!

First Grade Program overview

Objective for students: to experience a variety of mediums and techniques used for creating art. Introduce art history text and continue exposure to the elements of art. Using art tools, developing fine motor skills and following a series of directions.

Spider and Web-review line direction, direct drawing create a web with crayon, paint over with watercolor and observe the reaction of wax to water, add salt to wet paint to create another effect.

Science Art connection Observation/Imagination

Cookie People around the world-using a pattern to cut out a shape. Human form. Looking a traditional dress and costumes around the world. Using assorted papers to create unique clothing. Drawing details with crayon and or pencil. Cultural connection

Scrappy Puppies- using patterns and following a series of directions artist create their own dog portrait for scrapbook paper. Skill building

Sometimes I feel…- faces show emotions. Using templates for a head shape, students cut and color a human face that expresses a specific emotion/feeling of their choice. Collage and drawing. Vocabulary Observation/Imagination

Rainbow Zebras-  Zebras facts and fun, this painting, coloring and collage project challenged students to follow a series of directions, trace a pattern, composition and design. What is a background? Tiger Tiger- Inspired by the work of Henri Rousseau student used tempera paints, drawing a collage create their own jungle tiger. Science Art connection Observation/Imagination

School Project- Heart drawing and watercolor project for online sales

Klee Cat- inspired by the work of Paul Klee students learned how to follow a series of direct drawing instructions and create their own Cat/Bird composition. Completed project in crayon and watercolor

Awesome Giraffes – Giraffe facts and fun. Artists created a colorful background habitat for their art giraffe. Using a pattern for the head they drew their own giraffe complete with ears, eyes, muzzle and awesome cone! Cut paper collage, makers and color pencil for details.

Kindergarten Program overview

Kinder Cats-Artists create their own cat using pre cut shapes, crayons and color pencils.

Name Game-Line direction, following series of stop and go directions, how to use a paint brush, watercolor blending, skill building.

School Project- Heart drawing and watercolor project for online sales

Snow Person- creating a background with sponge and circle stamps. Collage elements to cut and apply with glue to a background in a specific order- size (small, medium large) position, (top, middle, bottom) parts of the face, adding details, building a collage.

Rainbow City- artists created a rainbow background sky and added 6 building/rectangles using the color wheel as a guide. Details drawn with crayons and color pencils

Red White &Robot- line direction painting, build a robot with 6 rectangular shapes glue to background, add face/ details with crayon, collage and or stickers.

Kinders worked with writing their name big little top bottom and sideways with rainbow crayons. Part II watercolor over name art exploring blending and watercolor techniques.

1st grade Spiders are (almost) everywhere

...but not in the Antarctic.
Day one student drew the spider web following a series of direct drawing instructions. Using vocabulary such as vertical, diagonal, horizontal, intersecting and connecting, the artists created their own web using crayon and filling the page. A rainbow color wash was added and the last step sea salt to give it that dewy twilight twinkle.


Day two, we read spider facts and learned about their body structure and how they are not insects, then it was time to make a spider. Using a variety of collage papers in prints and solids students created the two body parts of spider and the 8 legs.

We are Royal

We are Royal...bad hair day. Pop and Humor great end of the year project with lots of personality!
Inspired by the fashions of the wealthy 18th century nobility, pencil drawing, sharpie and watercolors.
