This year we are going to expand our hands on learning and really move in a process over product direction. And what better way to start the New Year than with a series of painted paper workshops.

Welcome to Our New Year and STEAM
Greetings,
It's a new school year (2015-16) and I have a lot of exciting projects, processes and techniques lined up. As we move forward with our school mission to become a STEAM academy I too am developing art lessons with this focus. Our big questions in the art room this year are "What is the Art in in Science and What is the Science in Art? Last year I created a mission statement to support the direction of my teaching and the classroom environment. Connecting to Common Core/Essential Questions my purpose it to build stronger more impactful art sessions and a more meaningful art experiences for the students.
Stay tune for some answers.
Hands on Exploration, Discover and Creativity!

Bird Prints
This is such a fun 4 part project that connects to 5th grade social studies while reinforcing skills and introducing students to print making as an art form.
I use a lot of handouts to support this project and allow a lot of time for students to develop a collect of bird drawings for their portfolio. They are encouraged to make notes and compare the line drawing resources with the color prints provided.
This project also integrates the travels and art work of American Artist James Audubon.

Discovery Day
Discovery Day, 5th grade students were allowed to select one object from a tray placed on each table. Then they were given the following guidelines: Each table would work as a team (designated by their color tray of object) all teams were given the same basic contruction supplies, small Styrofoam base, cut bit of a straw, yarn, paper clip, 6 inches of tape, small paper plate...
They had 10/15 minutes to create a group sculpture, give it a title and a brief description such as where would this be displayed, how big would it be, does it do anything...?
Each sculpture had be able to be transported to the front table on two plastic spatulas. All members of the group had to be involved in the presentation.
