What did we do this year in Art?

Habitat to Home was our art room theme for 2017-18

We explored a variety of artistic processes, asked questions presented connections and made discoveries- during the journey created some great art too!

Fifth Grade program overview

Objective for students: to experience a variety of mediums and techniques used for creating art. Expanding art history knowledge, connect to class themes while building art vocabulary. Using art tools, building onto fine motor skills, support individual development of expression and following a complex series of directions.

Audubon Day- Introduction to famous American based artist, explorer and naturalist John James Audubon. How did he live and work?

Bird sketches-studying class resources, handouts, and print reproductions create a bird sketchbook, pencil & sketch paper. Looking closely, details, contour lines, anatomy, using art/science vocabulary. Science/Art connection  

 Audubon inspired bird prints-Student select bird drawing from their portfolio to create as a limited run series of print. Transfer image to soft plate using a wooden stylist. Model printing process. Small groups pull prints, sign artist proof, refine and make individual paper and ink color choices. Reflect on images.

Engineering/Art connection observe imagine process product

 Royal Birds- Building on information from the Audubon project, students drew their own royal bird, pre-printed frames provided a formal presentation. Projects were completed in maker, crayon and or color pencil. Inspired by famous portraits of the 16^th-19^th century.

Claymation Selfies- using simple line drawings as the bases for a self-portrait, artists added color and detail with modeling clay. This project allowed for a lot of personal expression and encouraged creative exploration of materials

4th Grade Artistic Creations 2017-18

Objective for students: to experience a variety of mediums and techniques used for creating art. Expanding art history knowledge, connect to class themes while building art vocabulary. Using art tools, strengthen hand eye coordination in creativity and following a series of more complex directions, problem solve as individuals.

Starry Night Inspired Landscape -What are the basic elements of landscape? Dividing the picture plane. Art vocabulary, following a series of direct drawing instructions, sketching, developing a personal approach drawing crayon and over painting with water colors, salt added for star effect. City/Country theme

Math/Science/Art observed and imagined landscapes

Building a City- Hands on construction with blocks to understand one-point perspective.

Imaginary buildings- If you could construct any kind of building you wanted to what would it look like? Using a variety of art materials students created their own building as part of their class town. Project connects to engineering and design concepts

Charming buildings- working with model magic clay artists created 3-D mini charm buildings Project connects to engineering and design concepts

The red barn – moving from 2-D to 3-D construction, students were given a flat barn template and challenged to cut, collage and create their own 3-D construction. Project connects to engineering and design concepts

Art History connection:  Picasso, Van Gogh, Romare Bearden, Norman Rockwell, Grant Woods 

3rd Grade Artwork 2017-18

Objective for students: to experience a variety of mediums and techniques used for creating art. Expanding art history knowledge, connect to class themes while building art vocabulary. Using art tools, developing fine motor skills and following a series of directions

Owls- what is an owl shape, what are owl body parts? Continuous line drawing, following a series of steps, learning to let the pencil/pen guide your design, pen stays on the paper. Problem solving how to create small details? Color, cut and create and environment Science/Nature/Art connection observation -imagination

Leaping Orca- what is an orca what are the body parts? Building a multi-layer composition. Watercolor background to create ocean and sky/color blending, tempera paint splash, sketch, draw, color and cut out whale form and position on background elements. Art vocabulary and skill building.

Howling Wolf- Supporting grade curriculum Native American studies artists create a narrative work using color value sky/stars/moon background and a wolf silhouette. Project completed using tempera paint, construction paper, metallic markers and gel pens, Painting and Collage. Nature/Art observation imagination

Totem Pole Project: Building on previous knowledge/skills students create a paper totem component that will be part of a larger group project. Handouts, design samples and coloring pages provided inspiration. Paper collage. Skill building and connecting to Core curriculum.

Clay Owls-developing clay building skills to create an owl form. Artists used tools to create patterns and design. Part II, tempera glaze paints were applied to coat and protect the finished project.

Third/Fourth Grade Program overview

Objective for students: to experience a variety of mediums and techniques used for creating art. Expanding art history knowledge, connect to class themes while building art vocabulary. Using art tools, strengthen hand eye coordination in creativity and following a series of more complex directions, problem solve as individuals.

Winter Landscape- this crayon resist project introduced basic landscape composition and challenged the artists to present winter trees and the illusion of depth. The composition was completed with a watercolor wash.

 Tree in landscape- the project uses direct drawing techniques and shows artists how to use the negative space to create a positive image. After several practice sketches, the artists drew their final composition with white glue on black paper. Part II color was added to represent a specific season, using chalk pastels.

 City and Bridges- Hands on construction with blocks to understand one-point perspective. Coloring pages and challenges to design a bridge. Project connects to engineering and design concepts

 Paint the town- color theory and blending, using tempera paint students covered their entire paper with layer of color. This paper will be the basis for the next project.

 Imaginary buildings- If you could construct any kind of building you wanted to what would it look like? Using a variety of art materials and their own painted paper students created their own building as part of their class town as well as their own city block. Project connects to engineering and design concepts

 

 

 3-D construction-using recycled boxes as the basic structure students created their own building, collage and drawing added the color and details. Buildings were attached to a cardboard lawn where future details were added with model magic to present a completed building/site/landscape. Project connects to engineering and design concepts

Second Grade Program overview

Objective for students: to experience a variety of mediums and techniques used for creating art. Introduce art history text and continue exposure to the elements of art and vocabulary. Using art tools, developing fine motor skills and following a series of directions

Fairytale Villains-color values, complimentary colors, symmetrical, asymmetrical, following a series of direction involving cutting and drawing. Storytelling and emotion through art.

Art Connection: Cubist portrait work by Pablo Picasso

The Great Sea Turtle Project- Warm cool, creating a habitat and a sea turtle, Aboriginal Inspired, painting, collage, stamping, cutting and designing. Building a multilayered composition with movement.

Science Art connection Observation/Imagination

Koi Fish- students were introduced to art work featuring the koi fish, particularly prints from Japan. Using direct drawing and patterns they created their own unique koi fish. Science Art connection Observation/Imagination

Jellies- Observation/Imagination, students draw a jellyfish shape with crayon, apply watercolor wash and sea salt. Project is completed with glow in the dark glue to add the bioluminescent quality to the art.

Clay Sea Turtles- students constructed their own clay sea turtle using basic building skills and information gained from previous sea turtle project, after the drying time artists painted their project with a choice of glazes. Science Art connection Observation/Imagination

Pre K  Special Day Class & Pre K Kinder DHH program overview

Objective for students: first experiences to a variety of mediums and techniques for creating art. Hands on development of fine motor skills and begin to follow a basic direction.

Kinder Kats- Exploring materials and creating, using precut cat shapes, crayons and color pencils Fine motor skills, hands on experience

Mini clay pumpkins- first clay experience creating a sphere shape. Part II adding color and paper hand shaped leaves with student’s names supports Pumpkin Unit/Seeds/plant cycle

 My Winter hat- Showing emotions in art, parts and placement of features on the human face using precut shapes to create their own Happy, Sad, Angry… expression.

City at Night-  Color blending to create a starry night sky. Using pre-cut shapes artists build a city skyline. Sky/Ground, City/Country

Shape house- Pre-cut forms to build a house following a series of directions. Shape identification and skill building.

Expressive Color painting-  Using 6 rainbow color tempera paints to cover the paper in an expressive and exploratory project. Color theory

Magic Snails- following a series of directions artist blend 2 colors of clay (model magic) to create a coil form and build a snail shape.

First Grade Program overview

Objective for students: to experience a variety of mediums and techniques used for creating art. Introduce art history text and continue exposure to the elements of art. Using art tools, developing fine motor skills and following a series of directions.

Spider and Web-review line direction, direct drawing create a web with crayon, paint over with watercolor and observe the reaction of wax to water, add salt to wet paint to create another effect.

Science Art connection Observation/Imagination

Cookie People around the world-using a pattern to cut out a shape. Human form. Looking a traditional dress and costumes around the world. Using assorted papers to create unique clothing. Drawing details with crayon and or pencil. Cultural connection

Scrappy Puppies- using patterns and following a series of directions artist create their own dog portrait for scrapbook paper. Skill building

Sometimes I feel…- faces show emotions. Using templates for a head shape, students cut and color a human face that expresses a specific emotion/feeling of their choice. Collage and drawing. Vocabulary Observation/Imagination

Rainbow Zebras-  Zebras facts and fun, this painting, coloring and collage project challenged students to follow a series of directions, trace a pattern, composition and design. What is a background? Where do Zebras live? Where does your Rainbow Zebra live?  Science Art connection Observation/Imagination

Tiger Tiger- Inspired by the work of Henri Rousseau student used tempera paints, drawing a collage create their own jungle tiger. Science Art connection Observation/Imagination

Kindergarten Program overview

Objective for students: to experience a variety of mediums and techniques used for creating art. Introduce art history text and the elements of art. Develop fine motor skills and following simple directions

Kinder Cats-Artists create their own cat using pre-cut shapes, crayons, embellishments and color pencils.

This is Me! - Artist self portrait

Name Game-Line direction, following series of stop and go directions, how to use a paint brush, watercolor blending, skill building.

Snow Person- creating a background with sponge and circle stamps. Collage elements to cut and apply with glue to a background in a specific order- size (small, medium large) position, (top, middle, bottom) parts of the face, adding details, building a collage. Building vocabulary and understanding of size, proportion. Where would a snowperson "live"? Observation/Imagination Supports red, white and blue and weather/season units

Rainbow Robots- following a series of directions, build a robot with 6 rectangular shapes glue to background, add face/ details with crayon, collage and or stickers.  Artists created a rainbow background sky/ground. Vocabulary and skill building

Georgia Flowers – Following a series of directions, tracing a pattern, drawing big, students created large flower shapes, painted with tempera paint, cut out and details added with oil pastels. Later name leaves were added, to identify the artists.

Magic Snails- Introduction to clay, following a series of directions artists blend 2 colors of model magic to create a coil form and build a snail shape.
