2nd Grade art 2016-17

Second Grade artists are a bit more independent and able to follow 2-3 step directions. Here are the projects and challenges we enjoyed this year.
What did we do this year in Art?
Innovations in Art our art room theme for 2016-17
We explored a variety of artistic processes, asked questions presented connections and made discoveries- during the journey created some great art too!

Recycle Cherry Blossoms

It is blossom time here in Sacramento the perfect time for this great hands on painting/stamping activity. Connecting to Science Standards of plant growth cycles and revisiting seasons/weather we look at tree images in art that reflected a variety of styles and seasons (Impressionistic-Realistic). What is a blossom.

Hands on process. Large white paper with names-I modeled each step.
Using blank/expired Starbucks cards and black tempera paint students made branch marks on white paper working from a long diagonal line and adding side branches.

Stop remove black paint and cards. Small trays of tempera paint with pink, white and yellow paint were distributed along with a variety of small and med bottle caps, tiny wooden sticks and old yellow pencils/erasers. These tools were used to add the blossom details to each branch. Some blossoms could be falling or blowing in the wind. Best to limit the time for this step to help students self edit.

The result over 60 snapshots of spring and lots of smiles...in less than 50 minutes!

Color "wheel" landscape

Part I using the primary and secondary colors and direct drawing create a landscape from hot desert to the cool mountains.
Part II using Sharpies add landscape details and add snow/clouds to composition with tempera paints.

Mr. Bones Imagine and Observation

imaginary
human skeleton
This is a wonderful two part art project for 2nd grade. It  introduces the human skeleton, body proportion, and builds on imagination by using observation skills.
Part I imagine a human skeleton. Discuss where you "find" skeletons, review the basic body parts (I like to use the song head and shoulders knees and toes). Give the students a limited time to draw their very own imaginary human skeleton using pencil and pre-cut white paper. Remind artists that no two imaginary skeletons will look alike.

Part II using handouts, table images and a large skeleton model (we call ours Mr. Bones) explore the bones of the human skeleton. How many bones do adults have compared to babies. Give students black pre-cut construction paper and white color pencils or crayons. Using a simplified direct drawing approach draw the entire skeleton together. Remind students about body proportion (hands in relation to hips...) proper names for bones and how the skeleton works.

This project can be expanded to challenge many grades. Display both drawings together and compare and contrast the imagined Mr. Bones with the observed Mr. Bones.

Thursday

Cherry Blossom

Elegant water color work  using  only black and red and lots of imagination. Inspired by Japanese ink painting. Wonderful salute to spring!

Monday

2nd intro to Mr. Bones

This two part project involves both imagination and observation.

Saturday

January-February 2010

1/2 face to face project
3 parts
Students were introduced to the layout/composition of the human face. Where the parts are and what do they look like? Using pre printed face patterns they practiced drawing a “realistic” face. Looking in a mirror they changed their expression and observed facial feature shapes. After completing their sketches, students selected a preprinted half face portrait. They attached the image to a natural backdrop and completed the picture by drawing the other half of the face.
