Folk Cat
Using direct drawing as a jumping off point students created their own cat pattern. They used this form to trace and cut out a "fabric" (Old wall paper samples) cat. Using a hole puncher they made an seam/outline that they laced with yarn. Last details were added with buttons and thin black sharpie.

Western Expansion
Starry Nights meets the Oregon trail.
Students created a Starry Night inspired sky with watercolor, sea salt and crayon. Torn black paper was used for the ground. Working in teams they connected their ground and developed a story based on their knowledge of the 1800's journey out west. We looked at art prints from the time and table hand outs of the west (animals, landscape and clothing styles of the Old West) for inspiration.
With scissors, more black paper and Sharpie markers they added the final details to their composition.

Name Tile
Using their name as a graphic starting point, 4th and 5th grade students developed a colorful abstract tile design. These designs are reminiscent of tile elements found in many of the Spanish missions. This was a three part workshop focusing on the elements of art (line,
shape and color) as well as the principles of design (balance and unity). Students developed sketches into finished drawings using pencil and then added color with makers and or colored pencils. Finished tiles were matted on construction paper and will be displayed as a group wall piece.
