Drawing in the Garden

The last few days of school all classes were invited to spend some time sitting and drawing in our lovely Peace Garden. What a great way to wrap up another wonderful art year!

Thursday

Recycle Cherry Blossoms

It is blossom time here in Sacramento the perfect time for this great hands on painting/stamping activity. Connecting to Science Standards of plant growth cycles and revisiting seasons/weather we look at tree images in art that reflected a variety of styles and seasons (Impressionistic-Realistic). What is a blossom.

Hands on process. Large white paper with names-I modeled each step.
Using blank/expired Starbucks cards and black tempera paint students made branch marks on white paper working from a long diagonal line and adding side branches.

Stop remove black paint and cards. Small trays of tempera paint with pink, white and yellow paint were distributed along with a variety of small and med bottle caps, tiny wooden sticks and old yellow pencils/erasers. These tools were used to add the blossom details to each branch. Some blossoms could be falling or blowing in the wind. Best to limit the time for this step to help students self edit.

The result over 60 snapshots of spring and lots of smiles...in less than 50 minutes!

Monday

Still Life Surprise

Still Life Surprise-Inspired by Vincent Van Gogh's sunflowers and an assortment of Dutch flower themed still life masterpieces

Part I using a ruler to create a table/horizon line and watercolors  students develop an understanding of foreground, middle ground and background. They could only use a total of 4 colors in the painting process.

Part II using folded construction paper students will draw and cut out a symmetrical vase to sit on the table.

Part III The flowers and leaves are torn paper, the centers are pre-cut or torn.

Part IV: adding details and a camouflaged insect of some kind (surprise!)

Pretty Pastel Flowers

What if you were an ant...looking at a flower in a lovely spring garden, you would be little and the flower would be very very big.

That is the jumping off point for this colorful and imaginative project. Inspired by nature and the artist Georgia O'Keeffe we composed a flower picture that was toooo big for the paper. Drawing a large flower center off center on the paper the artists used chalk pastels to sketch, color and blend.

Thursday

Where is the vase?

I shared this project with 2nd grade artists but it can be adjusted to challenge a variety of age groups. Where is the vase, reinforces the use of foreground, middle ground and background using watercolor and both torn and cut paper collage. Van Gogh's Sunflower paintings and other classic still life pieces are a great visual support element and discussion focus.

This project can also connect to color theory and the elements of art.

Wednesday

Large full page Flower

Inspired by the American Artist Georgia O'Keeffe the students made large off the page pastel drawings of flowers. They were encouraged to use imaginary colors.
