A visit with Kinder

Sometimes our youngest artists need just a little extra time to feel comfortable with a new teacher that is why this year I decided to visit the Kinder classes in their home rooms before they signed up to journey to  the art studio. I was able to introduce myself, talk just a little bit about art, show the print of Starry Nights and introduce our first element of art the line (a dot that went for a walk) We found lines everywhere and drew them in the air with our fingers. In the end they made pasta pictures with plates of cooked lines (spaghetti) and they could even eat their art if they wanted to! What a great way to start a New Art Year!

Thursday

Rainbow Robots

Multiple skills and techniques-Background exploration of color using liquid watercolors and wet on wet application. Robot form created from pre-cut squares and rectangles-parts Head, Body, 2 arms 2 legs. Details added with additional shapes, crayons and color pencil. Allows for a lot of personal creativity within a structured format. Stickers and shiny collage material are available as a last step.

November December 2011 Red Rectangular Robots

This collage project reinforces color and shape recognition while building on spacial relationships; top, middle and bottom. Perfect for Kindergarten and 1st grade students, can be expanded to provide more of challenge older students. (These art pieces were created by Kinders).
Part I: Pre cut red rectangles and squares, students create a basic "human" robot form. One head at the top, body in the middle, two arms out of the sides of the body (not the head) two legs located below the main body.
Part II: Using color pencils, stickers and additonal colors students add addtional details to their robots. What does your creation do, does it have special powers or skills. If time permits students can make a pet for their art robot.

Thursday

Kindergarten shapes to trace

Part one select two shapes to trace creating an ABAB pattern.

Part two, select two colors and color in the shapes in an ABAB pattern.

Wednesday

Plate Face

Wow!
What better way to start drawing a person than to start at the top with the face. These paper plate faces are silly expressive and very colorful especially when kooky hair is added.

This is ME!

This intro to the arts is wonderful warm-up for students on a year long journey to draw a human form.

November-December 2006

Mosaics and Masks
Kindergarten students designed mosaic panels using squares of construction paper and gift wrap to create patterns.
They also looked at tribal masks for design inspiration.
