Our art room theme for 2016-17 
We explored a variety of artistic processes, asked questions presented connections and made discoveries- during the journey created some great art too!
First/Second Split  Grade Program overview
Objective for students: to experience a variety of mediums and techniques used for creating art. Introduce art history text and continue exposure to the elements of art and vocabulary. Using art tools, developing fine motor skills and following a series of directions

Painted paper-process painting with sponges, caps and corks- Fine motor skills, hands on experience

Impossible Machines –What are machines, how do they work? If you could create your own impossible machine what would that look like? What is its special job. Project completed with metallic color pencils and neon crayons on black paper.

School Project- Heart drawing and watercolor project for online sales

Tiger Tiger – Inspired by tigers in art (Henri Rousseau) students sketched a tiger head following a series for direct drawing instructions. Completed project used Sharpie, white color pencil and collage.Science Art connection Observation/Imagination

Group Project-  Rainforest with insects, collage, cut paper, students learned how to build a flower and exploration of habitats. Drawing on clear overheads to create dragonfly wings. Science Art connection Observation/Imagination

Awesome Giraffes – Giraffe facts and fun. Artists created a colorful background habitat for their art giraffe. Using a pattern for the head they drew their own giraffe complete with ears, eyes, muzzle and awesome cone! Cut paper collage, makers and color pencil for details.

Fifth/Sixth Grade program overview
Objective for students: to experience a variety of mediums and techniques used for creating art. Expanding art history knowledge, connect to class themes while building art vocabulary. Using art tools, strengthening fine motor skills, support induvial development of expression and following a complex series of directions.
Day of the Dead - Cultural exploration, artists that inspire, how does this tradition connect to North and South American history and World influences?
Connecting to classroom Social Studies themes
Festive Paper Skeletons/Calacas-Observe the human skeleton. Using a pattern cut, connect and create a stylized version of a human skeleton. Inspired by the Day of the Dead celebration create a personalized skeleton, using color pencil, markers and paper Science/Art observation and imagination
Paper Construction-building a symmetrical 3-D paper sculpture from flat paper, cutting skills, spatial problem solving, Engineering/Art
School Project- Heart drawing and watercolor project for online sales
Cherry blossoms- Watercolor, stamping and paint using recycled and unconventional paint materials, skill building-double loading your blush to create color values. Vocabulary.  Art History Connection: Japanese brush work
Big Face- Picasso/cubistic inspired drawing project. Direct drawing with rulers and pencils, measuring the placement of key facial elements. Symmetrical/ Asymmetrical. Pencil line drawing was redrawn with Sharpie. Choice of Blue period or Rose period. Painted with limited color palette and oil pastels for details.  Math/Art History connection, skill building and vocabulary





Peacock -Personal expression project, using support materials, direct drawing and coloring pages artists create their own peacock image. Sharpie, color pencil and purple/turquoise watercolor choices.
