5th 6th Cultures and Connections 2018-19


Objective for students: to experience a variety of mediums and techniques used for creating art. Expanding art history knowledge, connect to class themes while building art vocabulary. Using art tools, strengthening fine motor skills, support induvial development of expression and following a complex series of directions.

Day of the Dead Sugar skull drawing on black paper with metallic color pencils and gel pens. Cultural exploration, artists that inspire, how does this tradition connect to North and South American history and World influences?
Connecting to classroom Social Studies themes.

Big Face- Picasso/cubistic inspired drawing project. Direct drawing with rulers and pencils, measuring the placement of key facial elements. Symmetrical/ Asymmetrical. Pencil line drawing was redrawn with Sharpie. Choice of colors, color theory. Painted with limited color palette and oil pastels for details.  Math/Art History connection, skill building and vocabulary




3-D Paper sculpture -building an interesting stable 3-D paper sculpture from flat paper, cutting skills, spatial problem solving, Engineering/Art















Cubist Clay- Inspired by Picasso and the cubist approach to portraiture, this clay project used colorful model magic. Students made a small face form that could be hung by a wire. Art skill building/Art history/vocabulary










Rainbow Feathers- End of the year, creative group project, entire class cut and designed feathers that will be grouped together to make a pair of Rainbow Wings.

Promotion 6th grade Portraits-personal statement, photography and colorful collage (end of year project)
